For some of us, wrestling wasn’t wrestling until the early 80’s when Vince McMahon Jr. decided to converge his “sport” with mainstream America, thus introducing fans to a legendary scripted feud between pop star Cyndi Lauper and the iconic Captain Lou Albano.
One of the pleasant byproducts of that spiff was a villainous woman referred to as the Fabulous Moolah. Vintage villain. The female wrestler we all loved to hate. I remember how excited I was when Cowgirl Wendi Richter pinned her at the first Wrestlemania in 1985. It was great theater, and Moolah’s method acting helped sell the part.
Moolah, aka Mary Lillian Ellison, died this past week. She was 84.
I guess when I think back on the all time villains that defined my childhood, I have to rank her up there with the best of them.
Thanks Moolah – for the memories. It was great hating you.
