Chances are that you never heard of 1998’s Croupier starring Clive Owen. Or… if you have, then perhaps its because you caught wind of the movie’s unfortunate distinction of having been disqualified from The Academy Awards based on a technicality — it was shown on Dutch television, rendering it ineligible for the award.
Too bad.
I saw Croupier recently, not back when it was released in 1998. Chances are that had I seen this movie back when it was originally released, my first reaction would have been “wow, who’s this Clive Owen? he’s pretty good.” Now, fast forward almost ten years and Owen is easily among Hollywood’s A-list elite. And watching this movie proves why.
Without providing spoilers, I can tell you Croupier is a movie about both a heist and a scam. A movie with heavy doses of voiceover (but effectively used), Croupier is set against the backdrop of London’s casino gaming scene. Though the overall storyline and plot can get confusing at points, including a scene in a morgue where the audience is left wondering whether it’s real or fantasy, Croupier’s obvious strength is indeed the acting. In addition to Owen’s stellar performance, the movie is sprinkled with a bunch of great supporting performances, including one from ER’s Alex Kingston.
And in case you’re wondering, what does the word “Croupier” mean? Well, be sure to watch the movie — this very question (and answer) echo throughout the film.
Result — If you’re in the mood for a decent movie with good acting and some unforced suspense, then check out Croupier.
